Policies supporting sustainability in government
The Australian Government has a variety of policies designed to achieve better environmental, social and economic performance in the public sector.
As well as the Australian Governments policy of encouraging agencies to develop an EMS and join the Greenhouse Challenge programme, policies of most relevance to agency environmental sustainability include:
- The Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999
- Measures for improving energy efficiency in Australian Government operations
- The National Packaging Covenant
Sustainability assessment of policies and programmes
Consideration of sustainability issues relevant to new policy and programmes is a requirement of the Regulatory Impact Statement process. This process is administered by the Office of Regulation Review .
