Sustainability in Government
Transport
While transport use provides many social and economic benefits, is also impacts upon environmental sustainability through resource use and associated emissions, including of greenhouse gases.
Commonwealth Fleet Target
In February 2003 the Government agreed on an environmental target covering approximately 8000 vehicles within the Commonwealth Tied Contract Fleet based upon a rating scheme called the Green Vehicle Guide . The target aims to increase the proportion of general pool vehicles with scores in the top half of the Green Vehicle Guide from 18% to 28% by December 2005, while maintaining the Australian-made proportion of the fleet.
Australian departments and agencies can reduce the environmental impacts of their transport use through:
- using the Green Vehicle Guide to assist in choosing fuel efficient and low emission vehicles
- providing Travel Smart information to agency staff
- providing videoconferencing and teleconferencing facilities to reduce the need for travel
- taking access to transport into account when making decisions about the location of new premises
