Sustainability in Government
Energy
The efficient use of energy in Australian Government operations can save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The Australian Governments policy for energy in government operations requires departments and agencies to:
- report energy consumption to the Australian Greenhouse Office annually
- report against energy intensity targets
- meet minimum building energy performance standards
- purchase energy-star enabled office equipment
- purchase energy efficiency star rated equipment of 4 stars or better
Agencies should also consider:
- opportunities to reduce energy use through better procurement
- conducting energy audits and implementing cost-effective audit recommendations
- training and staff awareness about energy efficiency
- use of accredited green power
A new policy for energy in Australian Government operations will be released in the second half of 2006.
